This course is designed for students who have average to above average skills. Emphasis is placed on broadening students’ reading background. Literature studies include Greek mythology; classic and modern short stories, and poetry. Additional course work includes grammar and grammar usage, spelling, vocabulary-building, oral communications skills, and theme and creative writing. (Essentials of the "Cut the Deck" writing program are covered).

112 – English I Modified

This course is modified for students who have below average skills and is designed to meet the individual needs of the student. Emphasis is placed on broadening students’ reading background. Literature studies include Greek mythology; classic and modern short stories, and poetry. It will enable the student to improve his or her reading and comprehension skills. Students will work on developing written communication for a variety of purposes, strengthening basic grammar and increasing vocabulary knowledge.

121 – English II

This course is designed for students who have average to above average skills. Literature studies are continued with emphasis placed on classic and modern novel studies, Shakespearean drama, and nonfiction writings. Additionally, grammar and grammar usage, spelling, vocabulary-building, and oral communication skills are emphasized. (Essentials of the "Stack the Deck" writing program are covered along with creative writing).

122 – English II Modified

This course, designed for students who have average to above average skills, provides background and literature study from the Colonial period of America to the present with units being correlated with American history studies. Additionally, continued studies of grammar and grammar usage and a review of several types of expository writing styles studied in English I and II are stressed. The research process is studied with a research paper being written. Improvement in spelling, vocabulary, and oral communication skills are stressed.

132 – English III Modified

This course is modified for students who have below average skills. It provides background and literature study from the Colonial period of American to the present with units correlated with American history studies. Students will continue to work on developing written communication, strengthening basic grammar and increasing vocabulary.

This course, designed for students who have average to above average skills, centers on the study of English literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present and on classic and modern world literature. Several methods of writing are covered, including a research paper completed independently. Additionally, grammar and grammar usage, punctuation, and vocabulary are stressed. Critical thinking and listening skills continue to be emphasized. Oral communication skills are stressed with presentations being given to a variety of audiences.

142 – English IV Modified
