October's - Tip for Parents Standardized Testing at ISVI As a result of the No Child Left Behind Act, standardized testing has become the most commonly accepted measure of determining a student’s progress in school. It also provides a method of evaluating the effectiveness of the instruction and programs at their school. The state of Illinois requires all students to participate in some type of standardized testing each year in grades three through eight and 11th. At ISVI, standardized tests are administered to students with all of their accommodations as identified in their IEP. Standardized testing at ISVI includes: The Terra Nova, published by CTB McGraw-Hill, is administered twice a year to students in grades 3-8 as a pre and post test to determine if the student is making adequate progress educationally. Subjects evaluated are reading, arithmetic, science, and social studies. The Terra Nova is aligned with the Illinois learning standards. The Explore test, published by American College Testing, is administered to ninth graders as preparation and practice for taking the ACT. The Plan, again published by American College Testing, is administered to tenth graders, again as preparation and practice for taking the ACT. The ACT, published by American College Testing and the Prairie State Achievement Examination, published by PEM Pearson, are administered to eleventh graders as a state required evaluation usually in late April. Finally, the Illinois Standards Achievement Test, published by PEM Pearson, is administered to students in grades 3-8 usually in the spring of the year. The ISAT is a state required test that is aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards. |
