December's – Tips for Parents Getting Kids in the Kitchen The holidays are a good time to enlist your child’s help in the kitchen. The experience they gain while enjoying time with family in the kitchen can be invaluable. At ISVI, the dorm staff encourages student participation in the kitchen. Students are expected to assist in many aspects of food preparation and kitchen clean-up. You can find some helpful ideas and a guide to some kitchen activities in the Transition Living Program curriculum on ISVI’s website. The Transition book outlines skills that all students work on while living at ISVI. Some skills the RCWs work on daily include having students request specific snacks, getting their own drink of water from the sink, preparing simple foods to the extent possible, pouring liquids, measuring foods, and using the toaster. Students in each living group prepare a full meal in the dorm at least one time a month. They are given a budget, plan the menu, participate in making the list, and do the shopping along with a staff person at the local grocery store. Most students enjoy the entire process and talk about "what they’re having" a few days in advance of the meal. Students learn to set the table, assist with the meal preparation and kitchen clean up. Don’t let your child miss out on the many opportunities and fun times they could enjoy working together with you in the kitchen. Have a great holiday season! |
