August's - Tip for Parents Back-to-School Packing Tips As August gets under way, parents and families of ISVI students will begin preparations for return to school, or for beginning their ISVI journey. The Parent/Student Handbook provided to each family at registration offers a list of recommended clothing and personal items that students may want to bring to school with them for their dorm room. It is a good idea for parents to assist children in making good decisions about what clothing to pack and encouraging them to dress appropriately for school. The dress code at ISVI includes: students are not allowed to wear shirts that advertise alcohol/tobacco, tank tops, or short shorts. In the dorms after school day hours, children are given some leniency regarding their dress. For example, they are allowed to wear sweat or leisure pants or shorts, t-shirts, etc. on weekends and after school hours. However, during the school day, students will be encouraged to ‘dress for success’ and not a day at the beach. Residential staff will be available in the mornings to help students make smart clothing choices. We often get questions about students bringing TVs, DVDs, and video games with them to school. Students have access to TV in common areas in the dorms. They may choose to bring a TV with them for their bedrooms, however cable is not accessible from the bedroom areas. Some students do hook up their video games in their rooms and are allowed to play video games unless restricted due to discipline issues, or for homework/study periods. Violent or mature-rated games or videos are not allowed. Students are encouraged not to borrow or loan games and are reminded that ISVI is not responsible for their personal belongings. Students are not allowed in each others’ bedrooms, so games are generally played in the common living areas. ISVI does have Wii game systems available for students to use on weekends and some scheduled Wii activities during evening recreation times. *Thanks to the ISVI Parent Association, who donated the gaming systems. The students really do enjoy them. If you have any questions as you assist your child in packing for school, please contact Becky Stevens or one of the dorm supervisors. You may call the school’s switchboard, 217/479-4400, to contact us. We look forward to seeing you all on registration day, August 16. |
