August's - Tip For Parents Get Geared Up
While it may seem like we have just finished with our school year, the new year is closing in fast. We have been very busy getting the rooms in shape as well as getting schedules finalized. Here are six tips you can use when you and your child get ready to head back to school!
1. Take time to enjoy what is left of the summer. Don’t get wrapped up in the back to school thing while still enjoying the fun summer activities. Build in extra time to just “hang out” with your child.
2. Let your child know they will be fine at school. Reassure them. Begin talking to your child about school and let them know when school will begin and ask them to help decide when it is time to “get things ready”.
3. While this is a “new year”, it is also a continuation of the old. Focus on what was positive about school. Help them to begin getting excited about the new, but understand many things have not changed so they will feel safe and secure coming back.
4. Tell your child they will be fine. Before school starts, have them “reconnect” to old friends. Many of their friends do not live in their communities, so getting in contact will help them reconnect and renew friendships.
5. Shopping for new school clothes and supplies is an exciting time and should be fun. Don’t over do it, however. This may create anxiety in your child. Again, make sure they are part of the process. Discuss with them how they will set up their rooms, when they will study, what they will need to make sure they have a piece of home here at ISVI.
6. Once you are here, take the time to tour the campus. We are making some changes this year including some dorm assignments. Go over your child’s schedule and make sure they know where their classes will be. Some of the teachers will be here on registration day. However, you are welcome and encouraged to call and talk to your child’s teacher. Let them know what has happened that is positive as well as what might cause a concern. It is important for us to know what has impacted your child during the summer.
Hope the rest of your summer is great and goes by without a hitch. We are gearing up for ’08-’09 and will be ready when August 17 rolls around.
