Hello from the Education Department at ISVI!

Let your child’s teacher know what you have found to be the way your child learns best.
Learn about the classroom(s) where your child will be meeting for their various classes. Provide information to the teachers on what pleases you as well as your concerns.
It may be more realistic for you to view your child as someone who has a learning disability rather than a visual disability. I like to define a learning disability as one who learns differently.
Continue to read articles about your child’s disability and remember to keep an open mind.
Work with your child at home. Don’t depend on your child’s school to be the only source of education. There are workbooks that can be used at home. Take your child to educational places such as plays at the local college, the museum, or historical places throughout your area. Include a trip to the bookstore when at the mall. Talk to your child’s teacher(s) to see where they purchase resources for the classroom.
Join a support group. You will learn how other parent cope and problem solve when educational or medical issues arise.
Most of all, be comfortable with yourself and your decisions you make for and with your child. Do not feel guilty for providing or not providing treatments or therapies for your child. Some you can afford and some you cannot. Some may work and some may not. You know your child best. Give your child all the love and support they need to succeed.
