The Milestone

The Milestone is a voice recorder with internal memory, voice recorder that can be used with a sd memory card and mp3 player.

Total recording time allowed on internal memory is up to two hours.

Recordings of more than two hours are done on a SD memory card

Folders can be voice labeled and easily navigated.

Orientation to Unit

Place the unit on a flat surface with the memory card slot toward the right and buttons facing up.

In the top left corner is a speaker.

Buttons on the face are in a cross design.

Top center - record

Just below the record is an indented round play button

Left of play is the left arrow that is also the rewind button.

Right of play is a right arrow also the ff button.

Below play is the mode button.

On the top edge facing away from you from left to right are: select, USB port and power port.

On the right edge is the SD memory card slot.

On the bottom right edge is a headphone jack also used for line in recordings.

II. Functions:

increase volume

mode key plus right arrow

decrease volume

mode plus left arrow

wake up from sleep mode Press any key on the face.

move between applications, (memory card voice recorder, mp3 player and internal memory)

Press the selector button on top left edge of the Milestone.

Get memory available and battery status

Press mode button for 1.5 seconds.

Recharge the battery

You can plug in the power adapter or connect the Milestone to a computer.

Recording Functions:

You can record up to ten hours with a fully charged battery.

Complete a short recording

Hold down the record button found on the top center of the face until finished recording.

start a continuous recording

Press the record key and play button.

stop a continuous recording

Press the record button by itself.

Record through the line in jack

Press the ff, rew (rewind) and selector keys together.

Play Functions:

play back

Press the indented play button.

Pause a playing file

Press the play button again.

Play back next message

Press the ff key, (right arrow)

play back previous message

Press the rew (rewind) key, (left arrow)

replay same message from start

Press the rew (rewind) key if the message has been playing for more than three seconds.

Jump to last message

Press the ff and play buttons together.

Jump to first message

Press the rew (rewind) and play buttons together.

Deleting Messages:

Delete a message

Press the mode and play buttons together. You should hear a short beep.

Delete all messages forward

Press play, mode and ff keys together.

Delete all messages backward

Press play, mode and rew keys together.

Moving between and within Folders

scroll forward through messages

Press and hold the ff key (right arrow)

scroll backward through messages

Press and hold the rew key, (left arrow)

move to next folder

Press selecterkey bplus any key on the face.

You will hear the folder spoken with a number or the voice label if any were made.

Copying/pasting into the MILESTONE:

1. Put the smaller end of the USB cable in the top port of the MILESTONE.

2. Put the flat end of the USB cable into a USB port on your computer. If you are using Windows-XP the unit will be found automatically.

If you are using Windows-98, ME or 2000, a driver needs to be installed.

3. Go to the folder on your computer where there is a audio file to move and copy it to the clipboard.

4. Move to the MILESTONE in the tree view of drives.

5. Move to the list of folders in the MILESTONE and will see/hear m1 m2 etc. Just enter one of these folders and paste in the file.

Now you can use the file playing commands above and access the file. Of course you must be in the correct folder. The m1, m2 etc files are found in the internal memory.

Voice Recorder:

This is mainly used for short messages, grocery lists, etc.

There are five folders in the voice recorder labeled as 1-2-3-4-5.

You can move from one to another by pressing the selector button along with one of the five buttons on the face. They are as follows:

You will hear the folder number spoken when you press the key combinations shown below.

folder one: selector plus record

folder two: selector plus left arrow (rew)

folder 3: selector plus play

folder 4: selector plus right arrow (ff key)

folder 5: selector plus mode

You can record a voice label for each folder mentioned above by keeping the two buttons depressed longer than four seconds and say the label you wish. Then release and the recording stops. The milestone doesn't start recording until the buttons are held down for at least four seconds for safety of accidentally erasing a folder name.

MP3 PLAYER: Files, folders and directories to be placed onto a SD m memory card for the mp3 player must be created on a computer (desktop or laptop.) The are then moved to the SD card via the USB cable. Once MILESTONE has moved them to the SD card moving around in the files is very easy.

You can voice label folders in the same way explained above.

Navigating and Playing files in The MP3 Player Using a SD Card

You move around in a folder using the left arrow (rew key) and right arrow )ff key.

Moving from folder to folder is done with the record and mode keys.

Skimming through a message/file is done by holding down the left or right arrows (rew, ff keys.) The playing will start after about a second. However, the speed of playing will increase depending on how long the arrow is held down.

Move back one folder by pressing the record key. If no folder exist going backward, a beep is made.

Move forward one folder by pressing the mode button. If no folder exist to move to, a beep is heard.

When moving forward between folders you will hear a high to low pitch.

When moving backward between folders you will hear a low pitch to high pitch.

Folder are labeled with a number if no voice label is made. You hear these as you move through the folder list. Voice labels can only be made on the MILESTONE. You cannot make a voice label on the computer and move it over to the MILESTONE just as shown when moving from folder to folder on the internal memory card.

You can record a voice label for each folder mentioned above by keeping the two buttons depressed longer than four seconds and say the label you wish. Then release and the recording stops. The milestone doesn't start recording until the buttons are held down for at least four seconds for safety of accidentally erasing a folder name.

All files in a folder can be played back to back by following these steps.

1. If you wish to play all files starting with the first one in a folder do the following:

a. holding Hold the left arrow (rew) and quickly press play.

B. Press the play button and all files will start playing.

C. Pause the playing by pressing play again.

D. Start playing again by pressing play.

2. If you wish to play a given file, press the right arrow (ff key) until reaching it. It will be automatically played.

3. If you wish to have automatic playing across all folders on a card, each folder must contain a file called

"AUTONEXT.YES."

Connecting To A Computer and Moving Files

1. Put the small end of the USB cable into the MILESTONE’S port.

2. Put the other flat end into a USB port on your computer.

You will hear a low to high ding when the connection has been successfully made.

Upgrading MILESTONE Software:

1. Connect your Milestone 311 via USB cable to a computer

2. Copy the file with the new software into a root directory (highest level directory in the internal memory or on the memory card)

3. Move to the system tray found just right of the taskbar.

4. Move to "safely remove hardware" and click or press the spacebar on this button. The computer will say, "it is now safe to remove the USB device" or something close to that message.

5. Remove the USB cable from your Milestone 311

Within the next 2-3 minutes Milestone 311 will update automatically. The device will let you know what it is doing. Simply wait until you hear the message, Software updated".

What To Do When Nothing Works Anymore

If you feel that your Milestone 311 is not functioning properly then it may be that the device is not powered, the device is in sleep mode, the keyboard is locked, the volume is set to low or the memory is full. Please perform the following checks prior to contacting your sales representative:

1. Connect your voice recorder to a power outlet and ensure that the charger is powered. Recharge the built-in battery for at least half an hour.

2. Press any button for at least half a second to check if the unit is powered on.

3. Check if the keyboard is locked by keeping the "Mode" button (bottom button with an embossed cross pattern) pressed, press the "Rec" button (top button with round indent the size of a pinhead) briefly and listen for the response of the device:

You hear the message "Keyboard active": Keyboard was locked and is now unlocked. Go directly to step 5.

You hear the message "Keyboard locked": Keyboard has now just been locked. Press the same combination of buttons once more to unlock the keyboard. The device will play the message "Keyboard active". Go directly to step 5.

You hear no message: The volume of the device is possibly turned down. Keep the "Mode" button (bottom button with an embossed cross pattern) pressed while simultaneously pressing down the right arrow button for approximately five seconds. Go to step 4.

4. If the locking of the keyboard been activated at low volume, you should Press the "Play" button (middle button which contains no symbol) to playback a message.

You hear one beep or a recorded message: The keyboard was not locked. Go directly to step 5.

You hear no beep and no recorded message: Locking of the keyboard was possibly activated at low volume. Please repeat the test once from step 3.

If you hear one beep or a recorded message, go directly to step 5.

If you do not hear any beeps or a recorded message, the device is not functioning properly. Please contact your sales representative.

5. Check to see if the memory is full by Perform a test recording. This is done by pressing down on the "Record " button (top button with round indent the size of a pinhead), speaking a message and releasing the "Rec" button.

Press the "Play" button (middle button which contains no symbol) to hear the test recording. If you hear the test recording, the device is fine and may be used without further complications. If you do not hear the test recording, the device is not functioning properly. Please contact your sales representative.

6. If At the beginning of the recording, you hear the message "Memory full": The memory of your voice recorder is full or almost full. Delete a message by replaying it and, at the same time, keeping the "Mode" button (bottom button with an embossed cross pattern) pressed while pressing the "Play" button (middle button which contains no symbol). Try again to perform a test recording. Should this not be possible again, then, your device is not functioning properly. Please contact your sales representative.

Reformat memory

If your Milestone 311 plays the message "No file system. Please format through PC connection" or you would like to format the internal memory or a memory card then please see below for the required steps:

1. Connect your Milestone 311 via USB cable to a computer

2. Select your Milestone 311

Click the right mouse button or Press the application key (third key from the spacebar’s right side.)

4. Arrow down to format and press enter. Alternatively you can click on it with your mouse.

If you have a choice of formatting using FAT32 or FAT, chose FAT.

Tab to "start" and press the spacebar or click your mouse.

6. Properly log-off your Milestone 311 from the computer as shown above.

The main reason for moving to "safely remove hardware" is that sometimes the hardware will sometimes not work anymore if you disconnect incorrectly.

7. Remove the USB cable from your Milestone 311. Milestone 311 does not give any acoustic feedback to acknowledge formatting.

Memory cards must be formatted with the standard FAT16 or FAT32 data system. Milestone 311 is optimized for FAT16. With FAT32 Milestone 311 operates slightly slower than with FAT16.
