Storing Recipes on the Computer A few weeks ago someone emailed asking if we knew of any recipe programs. Instead of telling all the things that didn't work, 55 computer users were posed this question, including "normally sighted" individuals as well as those using assistive software for computer access, and here are the methods being used: METHOD 1 - Create a file for each category such as Appetizers, casseroles, main dishes etc. Add to the file by moving to the bottom and pressing "enter "a few times. Then enter in your new recipe. Then when you are looking for an idea, for example in the Appetizers file, use your word processor's find/replace feature to search for a given recipe title or some ingredient. You would need to use the "next instance" option in your word processor's find/replace repeatedly until locating your choice. Here is an example of how to search using Microsoft Word - Version 2003 or Version 2007. Two recipes will be inserted from a cookbook listing shown below. It is a small part of a file called "Appetizers, Relishes and Pickles." Instructions will be included about how to search for recipe titles first and then by a specific ingredient second. The two recipes are at the end of this page. METHOD 2. One could make folders for each category and save each recipe in the corresponding folder. Then you could enter the folder via "my computer" or through your word processor-- access the preferred folder and finally use first-letter navigation until reaching a desired recipe. In order to prevent the need to type in recipes from your already-existing hardcopy collection, scanning is an option and then save the recipes into their corresponding folder.
