Social Science News- from Ms. Best
All of my classes (Geography, Government, and U.S. History) went to Bloomington earlier in the year with Mrs. French's classes to visit the Aviation Museum. The students loved this experience! Not only were they taught about different airplanes, engines, and helicopters they were also allowed to get into the cockpits and cargo transport areas of some of the planes!
Students from my classes were a big part of the decorating for the Veteran's Day Observance! My students wrote/brailled poems about veterans and colored pictures to use as the decorations in the dining hall. Some of them also helped set up the stage in the auditorium.
In February my students went to LLCC to participate in the 'attempt' to break a world's record in the category of the most people reading simultaneously the same speech for five minutes! We read the Farewell Speech that Abraham Lincoln gave as he was boarding the train in Springfield, IL en route to Washington, D.C. Unfortunately, the record was not broken!
Two of my classes were fortunate enough to get to return to LLCC to watch the one-man presentation of "Incognito." This presentation was in observance of Black History month, but it also showed the students the diverse reactions people may have when finding out a truth that had been kept secret for years. My classes were accompanied by Ms. Rodda's first hour class.
My U.S. Government classes are learning how our government was formed, how it works, and about both the U.S. Constitution and the Illinois Constitution. They are learning what it means to be a responsible citizen!
My American History classes are learning about the U.S. from its beginning to the present day. We have focused a lot on the major wars, the depression, the right for women to vote, and plan to delve into more of the modern day problems we face.
My Geography classes our focusing on the countries of the seven continents, their locations, physical features, capital cities, major economic resources, and their people.
ISVI STUDENTS TO HELP WITH IDEAS
AT LINCOLN MUSEUM
ISVI students and staff have
been asked to help one of the finest museums in Illinois. This is a
compliment and an honor.
The Education Director at the
Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum has asked for help from
ISVI students to make exhibits at the museum more informative for those
with little or no vision. Museum staff plan to prepare an audio program
to be carried by the visitor that provides key information about things
that are primarily visual.
ISVI O&M staff will share ideas
of ISVI students with the Education Director and on a future field trip
to the museum students will tour the museum and give first hand advice.
People from all over the world
come to the Abraham Lincoln Museum so this is an honor for ISVI staff
and students to be asked for advice. Their input will help form what the
museum does for years to come. |
