Physical Health & Development

January 2012 Update from the Physical Education Department

Wonderful news from the world’s greatest place, the ISVI Physical Education program. P90X has been adapted and incorporated into the ISVI High School P.E. classes. Not all portions of the program are used nor the full length as time does not permit the whole workout. The program augments the strength, endurance, and flexibility components of our program. The added benefit is the co-ordination and right brain and left brain involvement which increases one’s capacity to learn. It is also fun and challenging. The students appear to enjoy kenpo the most. We have also participated in the following activities: yoga, resistance training, rhythmic activities with a hint of cheerleading, track, raabeball, Trikkes, goalball, and aerobics. Second semester will consist of cupstacking, swimming, triathlon/obstacle course, dance, basketball, 10-shot, Trikkes, and bikes.

Topics and Activities of High School Health classes for 1st Semester 2011-2012

A variety of health topics and issues were discussed during the first semester. The students made health triangles composed of important activities or issues in their lives pertaining to the three areas of health. The anatomy of the eye was studied using a visual model of the eye. Each student then researched their particular visual impairment and presented their findings to the class. Illinois school law requires certain topics to be taught at some time during the high school years. Character building and the Safe Haven Law are two of these issues. The students participated in discussions and activities about these issues. Interpersonal skills were discussed and practiced as "what would you do in this situation". Regular physical exercise was discussed and the importance of it researched. With the guidance of the teacher each student made an activity pyramid and developed an exercise plan. Currently the students are participating in a unit on nutrition. They explored the My Plate web site provided by the U.S.D.A. to increase understanding of what good nutrition is.

Fitness Gains continue --

High School Physical Education classes have just completed a jump rope unit learning/using jumping and non-jumping skills. Our post-testing of skills showed a dramatic student improvement.
Currently high school Physical Education classes are participating in a basketball skills class and will end with our annual 10 Shot Tourney. The tourney coincides with March Madness in Illinois.

In September of each year the high school physical education students are given a battery of tests in class to determine fitness levels.  Throughout the year those tests are repeated to determine the effectiveness of activities provided in PE.  Although not all tests have been completed, the initial results reveal the 22nd consecutive year of huge fitness gains by our students.

Elementary and Middle school Adaptive Physical Education classes for first semester

The elementary and middle school students in adaptive physical education classes have participated in a variety of activities during the first semester. A baseline score of each student's fitness level is acquired by fitness testing. These tests are given at the beginning of school and again near the end of school to determine improvement. Throughout the school year activities are planned to improve fitness levels, improve knowledge of physical activities, and to offer fun recreational activities to the students. Activities are adapted to ensure each student is able to participate within any medical restrictions and to the best of their ability. During the first semester the students participated in one to three week units of the following activities; track with emphasis on the track events for the visually impaired, football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, cheerleading, and goalball. Individual skills and were practiced but the students did not actually play the game. Also rules and vocabulary were discussed along with strategies used to play the game. The students participate in daily flexibility and strength exercises as they take turns being the leader for these exercises. Currently the students are involved in a unit on Yoga.
