By Reggie Clinton - Superintendent ISVI March 10, 2009 For many years ISVI students have participated in the Missouri School Braille Challenge. Recently the Chicago Light House initiated a Braille Challenge for Illinois students. Thus, ISVI students now participate in both activities. Last Saturday, March 7, ISVI was represented by three students in this state wide competition. They were escorted by two ISVI staff members, Ms. Darla Chambers and Mr. Josh Dugan. Students representing ISVI were David K. and Anna W. in the junior varsity division and Brando C. in the varsity division. These three students matched their Braille skills against the other students from across Illinois who attended this friendly competition. David and Anna did not place in their division. But they did each have one contest where they achieved near perfect scores! These students put forth their best effort and ISVI is proud of what they accomplished! Brando did place in his division. In fact, he placed first! As part of taking first place he also received the top prize of $500 for his efforts! ISVI is proud of his accomplishment also! As part of placing first, he may now be eligible for the final round national competition to be held in Los Angeles, California later this summer. The top 60 competitors from across the nation are chosen for this prestigious event and a chance to win $5,000!. It would be very exciting for all of the ISVI family if he lands in the top 60 competitors and gets to travel to California this summer. There are 27 regions in the USA and we now wait to hear where Brando places after the regional competitions are completed. Congratulations to Anna and David for their efforts! Also, congratulations to Brando for his efforts and good luck as you wait to hear if you receive a spot in the national competition! |
