I. MileStone Overview
Easy use and Accessible Voice Recorder/MP3 Player
Developed in cooperation with and input from, the Swiss National Association for
the Blind, Milestone 311 is the most accessible voice recording memo on the
market.
Including just five large tactually marked control buttons, this small (3.35"x
2.13" x 0.55") device is not much larger than a credit card.
Exciting features of the Milestone are:

The Milestone is furnished with:

Recordings are saved in MP3 format, at 192 KBPS and 44.100 KHZ.
The Milestone provides voice feedback while you maneuver around the
unit, in a clear female voice.
The Milestone has an internal memory of 256 Megabytes, (2 hours of recording)
and also has an optional insertable Secure Digital Card, which could allow up to
140 hours of recording time, allowing download of MP3 formatted talking books.
The Milestone has a one-year warranty.
The Milestone is a voice recorder with internal memory, voice recorder that can
be used with a SD memory card and MP3 player.
Total recording time allowed on internal memory is up to two hours. Recordings
of more than two hours are done on an SD memory card. Folders can be voice
labeled and easily navigated.
II. Orientation to Unit
Place the unit on a flat surface with the memory card slot toward the right and
buttons facing up.
In the top left corner is a microphone.
Buttons on the face are in a cross design.
Top center – record
Just below the record is an indented round play button
Left of play is the left arrow that is also the rewind button.
Right of play is a right arrow also the ff button.
Below play is the mode button.
On the top edge facing away from you from left to right are: select, USB port
and power port.
On the right edge is the SD memory card slot.
On the bottom right edge is a headphone jack also used for line in recordings.
III. Functions
lock/unlock keyboard toggle
mode plus record
increase volume
mode key plus right arrow
decrease volume
mode plus left arrow
wake up from sleep mode, press any key on the face.
move between applications, (memory card voice recorder, MP3 player and internal

Press the selector button on top left edge of the Milestone.
Get memory available and battery status
Press mode button for 1.5 seconds
Recharge the battery
You can plug in the power adapter or connect the Milestone to a computer.
IV. Recording Functions
You can record up to ten hours with a fully charged battery.
Complete a short recording
Hold down the record button found on the top center of the face until finished
recording.
Start a continuous recording
Hold down the record key and then press the play button. Then let go of both.
You will hear a low to high pitch sequence when recording starts.
Stop a continuous recording
Press the record button by itself. A high to low pitch sequence will be heard
when recording stops.
Record through the line in jack
Press the left arrow (rewind, right arrow) (ff key) and top selector key
together.
V. Play Functions
Play Back
Press the indented play button.
Pause a playing file
Press the play button again.
Play back next message
Press the ff key, (right arrow)
Play back previous message
Press the rewind key, (left arrow)
Replay same message from start
Press the rewind key if the message has been playing for more than three
seconds.
Jump to last message
Press the ff key (right arrow) and play buttons together.
Jump to first message
Press the rewind key (left arrow) and play buttons together.
Deleting Messages
Press the mode and play buttons together. You should hear a short beep.
Delete all messages forward
Press play, mode and ff key (right arrow) together.
Delete all messages backward
Press play, mode and rewind key (left arrow) together.
VI. Moving Between and Within Folders
Scroll forward through messages
Press and hold the ff key (right arrow)
Scroll backward through messages
Press and hold the rewind key, (left arrow)
Move to next folder
Press selector key plus any key on the face.
When using the internal memory the folders are as follows:
Folder 1: selector plus record
Folder 2: selector plus left/rewind
Folder 3: selector plus play
Folder 4: selector plus left/ff
Folder 5; selector plus mode key
VII. Voice Recorder
This is mainly used for short messages, such as grocery lists or to do lists.
Milestone 311 stores recorded messages in one of five selectable folders. The
folders carry the internal names M1 to M5.
Attention: If you do change the folder names via a computer the messages will
not be accessible through the voice recorder application anymore. Renaming of
the folders will cut the link between messages and folders. The messages however
are not lost and may again be played back either by changing back the folder
names to M1 to M5 or by using the MP3 player application of Milestone 311 to
play MP3 files from any folders.
Messages are labeled by default as m001, m002 etc. This keeps the messages in
order on the disc.
VIII. Voice Labeling Internal Memory Folders
Hold down selector and any of the five face keys until hearing a pitch up beep.
Recording will not start until after four seconds. For example, holding selector
plus rewind until the start recording pitch up beep is heard. Say the folder
name and release the two keys. A down pitch is heard, signaling recording has
ended.
Press the same two keys once to check if your labeling was successful.
Deleting a Voice Labeled Internal Memory Folder Name and Return to the Default
Name
Voice labeled folders must be returned to default from a computer.
1. Put the SD card into a computer.
2. Move to the desktop with Windows key plus the letter M or click on minimize.
3. Locate “my computer” and open it.
4. Locate the SD card and press enter or click on it.
5. Locate the folder you want to return to default and enter it by pressing
enter or clicking.
6. Locate the "filename" and delete it.
IX. External SD Storage Card
Orientation and Insertion
SD cards are inserted on the right side of the Milestone. If labeled, this side
faces up. The rough edge facing up is an indicator for low-vision or blind users
when inserting an SD card.
On the edge of an SD card is the write-protection slide. Moving this toward the
card’s rough edge will unprotect, allowing transfer of information to the disc.
Moving the slide away from the card’s rough edge will prevent any information
from being deleted from the disc or saved to it.
Creating Folders and Voice Labeling Them on the SD Card
You can create up to 10 folders on the SD card.
However, to access folders other than m1 through m5, the MP3 player must be
used.
Below are instructions on how to format an SD card and create ten folders.
Then you will voice label five of them from the MP3 player.
1. Connect the USB cable to the Milestone.
2. Connect the other end of the USB cable to the computer.
3. Move to the desktop.
4. Open my computer.
5. Select the removable drive.
6. From the keyboard, press the application key.
7. From the mouse, press the right button.
8. Choose format.
9. Choose "fat" as the format file system.
10. Press enter on start or click omit.
11. Press enter on close or click on this option when formatting is finished.
12. You are placed back into the list of drives. Locate the removable drive and
click or press enter on it.
13. Press the right mouse button. From the keyboard, press the application key.
14. Press the letter W for new or choose this with the mouse.
15. Press the letter F for folder.
16. Type in "m1" followed by pressing Enter.
17. Repeat steps 12-15 until you have created 10 folders.
18. Once finished creating folders, go to the system tray, found right of the
taskbar.
19. From the keyboard, press windows key plus tab and then arrow once to the
right.
(Mouse users can click on the system tray.)
20. Locate “safely remove hardware” and press enter or click on it.
21. Select the drive you just used and press enter or click on it. You will be
told it is now safe to remove the device.
22. Disconnect the USB cable between the computer and Milestone. Return the
cable to it’s box for safe keeping.
23. Press the selector key to reach “MP3 player.”
(Sometimes you must press rewind plus record to access the list of folders when
moving out of the MP3 player and back in again. Then you can press the rewind or
ff keys to move through the folders created on the SD card.)
24. Press the rewind key until reaching “folder 1.”
25. Hold down the selector and record keys. Once you hear a pitch up sound,
speak the name you wish to give this folder and release the two keys.
26. Press the play button and you should hear, “folder” along with the name you
used.
27. Move to the next folder with the ff key. Repeat these last few steps until
you have finished voice labeling the folders.
Adding MP3 Files and Navigating Through Folders with the MP3 Player
1. Insert the SD card into your computer.
If you are using Windows XP or above, you will be asked what you want to do with
the new card. Press the letter O for “open folder to view files.”
You can click on the same option with a mouse.
2. Minimize this window.
3. Go to “my computer.”
4. Locate a folder where you have MP3 files and enter it.
5. Select an MP3 file and copy it to the clipboard.
6. From the keyboard, press "alt" plus the tab to reopen the SD card folder.
7. Using your mouse, maximize the SD card folder.
8. Paste in the file with "control" plus V from the keyboard.
Using the mouse, press the right mouse button and choose paste.
9. Take the card out of the computer and put it into the Milestone.
10. Press the selector key until hearing “MP3 player.”
11. Press the ff key until reaching the first MP3 file and the MileStone will
start playing it. You can press the ff key again to move to the next MP3 if any.
12. Press play to pause the file.
13. Previous folder in the MP3 player, you just need to press rewind or ff.
