Learn About ISVI

The Illinois School for the Visually Impaired is a school established by the Illinois Legislature in 1849 to provide specialized and intense services which focus on the unique learning needs of students with visual impairments, including additional disabilities.

ISVI recognizes and addresses the unique educational needs and interests of each student.

Every student receives instruction and guidance from staff who are sensitive to the needs of visually impaired students.

ISVI stands ready to assist local schools and parents whenever students need the services and resources of this school.

ISVI provides a broad range of instruction and services on its campus. Students can:

  • Learn with specially trained teachers and other staff who understand vision loss and its effects on development
     
  • Educators who are certified in visual impairments and/or subject area
  •                     orientation and mobility
                   specialists

    occupational and physical therapists

    adaptive physical education educators

    speech/language specialist

    a psychologist and social workers who provide counseling

    low vision specialist

    technology specialist

    Have access to 24-hour per day Health Center, staffed by licensed nurses 7 days a week

    Experience a school day which integrates language development, motor skills, independent living and self-help skills, behavior management and social development into all aspects of learning.

    Learn to talk and communicate, read and write, using Braille or other communication systems

    Become familiar with adaptive and assistive technology

    Learn to get around independently using orientation and mobility skills.

    Participate fully in extracurricular activities:

    be in the school talent show

    join the wrestling, swimming or track teams

    become a cheerleader

    be a member of the Forensics (Speech) Team

    learn to play a musical instrument

    learn outdoor sports such as fishing

    learn to bowl

    learn to dance

    attend exercise classes at a local heath club

    Have a home away from home

    live in pleasant dorms with caring staff

    visit museums, parks, malls and more

    have fun with friends in the Teen Center, social activities, the pool and at dances

    Learn the skills needed to live independently

    Dressing, eating, cooking, maintaining an apartment, budgeting

    Learn work skills, explore a career, get a job on campus or in the community

    Grow with friends who share and understand visual loss.

    The role of ISVI is to provide students who are blind and visually impaired a free, comprehensive educational program commensurate with individual needs and abilities. The school provides students with instruction in the same course work required of all school-aged children in Illinois.

    Specialized classes include:

    Students enjoying rhythm and music class

    * orientation and mobility

    * adaptive physical education

    * independent living skills

    * vocational education

    * music

    * art

    * Braille

    * adaptive computer technology

    Also offered is an extensive range of extracurricular experiences and opportunities to participate in recreational activities, on and off-campus jobs, competitive speech (forensics), track and field, wrestling, cheerleading and swimming.

    ISVI's program is flexible enough to provide for the diverse needs of all students who are blind or visually impaired, including those with multiple disabilities.

    Objectives
    ISVI works closely with parents, local educational agencies, consumers and interested others to ensure that students receive the benefit of the following educationally related objectives:
    * individualized instruction

    * participation in all phases of the schools program and campus life

    * participation in activities related to technology

    * promotion of self-confidence and self-respect

    * provision of career education and transition planning

    * participation in self-help activities, independent mobility and independent living skills

    The Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI), operating under the auspices of the Illinois Department of Human Services, Office of Rehabilitation Services, is a residential/day school for blind and visually impaired students.

    The school is located on an 18-acre campus in Jacksonville, a city of 25,000 people approximately 35 miles west of Springfield.

    ISVI provides blind and partially seeing students a comprehensive educational program commensurate with the individual needs and abilities. The school offers education, counseling, prevocational and vocational training, independent living skill training and an extensive range of extracurricular activities. The programs at ISVI are flexible enough to provide for the diverse needs of visually impaired students, including those with special needs.
