ISVI Happenings - May 2011Dates to Remember:June 2-4: Opening Doors, June 5-18: ISEE (ISVI Summer Employment Experience), June 12-18: Summer Camp Field Trip to New SalemThe classes of Mrs. Hauck and Mrs. Walker enjoyed a field trip to New Salem on May 5, 2011. When asked what the highlight of the trip was, several students stated that the movie about the history of Lincoln was their favorite part of the field trip. Other highlights were: Hearing re-enactors tell about the cabins and who lived in them, learning about cooking over a fire, feeling cornmeal, and seeing the sawmill. Sack lunches were provided by the dining hall staff and were enjoyed at a picnic table in the park. Annual Plant SaleMrs. French, ISVI’s Science Educator, and her students have been working hard planting seeds, and tending to plants to prepare for the Annual Plant Sale May 11 – 13. Staff were invited to purchase from a selection of tomato plants, pepper plants, various herbs, flowers, and ferns. The students waited on customers and gave them information about the plants. Proceeds from the sale will be used to purchase a television for the core area of Unit 2. Annual ISVI High School Art OpeningOnce again the Art Opening was held in the Joshua Rhoads Auditorium. It had the air of a big city art event, with music playing and refreshments available. Students stood beside their artwork as guests admired the artwork. The students explained their work, and answered questions. ISVI Participates in Jacksonville ParadeDressed in ISVI spirit-wear and Braille t-shirts, a large group of staff and students represented ISVI in the Jacksonville Downtown Turnaround Celebration on May 21, 2011. Students from the music department played drums as they rode on a decorated trailer. ISVI Cheerleaders proudly led the group in cheers. ISVI spirit signs were held high as many in the group tossed candy to the crowds along the street. Everyone had a good time! Students Meet Famous ClydesdalesISVI students took a field trip to view the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales that were in Jacksonville to be part of the Downtown Turnaround Celebration. There were ten horses and their Dalmation companion to meet and to pet. Prom 2011Prom was held on May 21, 2011 and the theme was “Hollywood Nights”. The decorations were spectacular! They included a background that looked like the front of an old movie theatre, with movie star posters, a large group of balloons in the shape of a star, and a “red carpet”. The students entered the dining hall in grand fashion, on the “red carpet”. The highlight was the naming of the King and Queen, and the Prince and Princess. Thanks go out to Mr. Thompson for providing the music, the dining hall staff for serving a wonderful meal, the staff who chaperoned, and to the residential staff for all of their assistance. Two students provided the music for the Post-Prom party at the Teen Center which lasted well into the night. Once again, it was a prom to be remembered!
