Abraham Lincoln Visits ISVI
On September 25, 2008, in honor of the upcoming Lincoln Bi-Centennial, Loreli Steuer (Co-Chair of the Jacksonville Lincoln Bi-Centennial Committee), an Abe Lincoln impersonator and ISVI students gathered in the auditorium. Every student will be receiving their own personal book about Abe Lincoln. The books are not yet in Braille form and will be arriving at a later date. Students were quick to answer Mrs. Steuer’s questions about what number president Mr. Lincoln was, what date he was born, and what war he was remembered for. Then what appeared to be President Lincoln himself gave a presentation stressing the importance of reading and told the students what a huge role it played in his life. Following his presentation the students had the opportunity to shake Mr. Lincoln’s hand, reach up to see how tall he was, and some even tried on his hat. And then, what a treat it was when President Lincoln joined the students for lunch in the dining hall!

Juke Box Classic Announcement
On October 23rd the chorus, led by Mrs. Kerhlikar, will be performing in the auditorium at 2:00 p.m. Mark McDonald of PBS (Public Broadcasting System) will be coming to tape the event. Mark McDonald is the orator of “Illinois Stories”. He will be taping interviews with Mrs. Kerhlikar and students prior to the taping of the concert. Hopefully we will find out on October 23rd when the concert will air on PBS/“Illinois Stories”. We will try to get the word out to families/guardians so that you can watch. If you are not in the WSEC, WMEC, WQEC viewing area we will have a video tape of the concert available for viewing in the media center.

Blow-Pops For Work Well Done!
Mrs. Hauck’s Pre-Vocational Skills class recently completed a project for the Central Illinois Community Blood Center. In less than two hours, five students put stickers on 1,068 individually wrapped lifesavers. The stickers said “Be a lifesaver-donate blood.” For their endeavors the class was paid in Blow-Pops. (Two bags of them) This was the second project this class has done for the Central Illinois Community Blood Center. Their first project was folding letters and putting labels on them. Everyone in the class continues to enjoy the Blow-Pops, even Mrs. Hauck!

Field Trip to the Courthouse
The classes of Mrs. Valentine, Mrs. Hauck and Mrs. Williams took a field trip to the Morgan County Courthouse. The classes learned what the qualifications are to be eligible to vote. They also learned the process of registering to vote. Soon the students will get to see how a voting machine for visually impaired people works as the government classes are going to be holding a school wide mock election.

Field Trip to the Prairieland Steam Show
On September 26th the classes of Mrs. Lyons, Ms. Walker, and Mrs. Frisch went to the Prairieland Steam Show. The students rode on a train and on a tractor. They saw horses, a helicopter, and witnessed a train robbery. Also, there was a chance to visit with a President Lincoln impersonator. The students really enjoyed the homemade ice cream!
