Summer Camp Experiences
An ISVI student had the opportunity to attend a camp in Maryland that was
sponsored by the National Federation for the Blind. The Lions Club paid the
registration fee for attendance. This
student is very interested in meteorology and he opted to be in a group called
“Air-Slam.” This group created weather balloons that had temperature gauges,
GPS navigator systems, and weather equipment. They then launched the
balloons. In addition to making a lot of new friends it was an interesting
learning experience.
A sports camp in Wisconsin was attended by three ISVI students. The students
competed with other visually impaired students in the sports of track,
wrestling, goalball, swimming, judo, and karate. There was a gentleman at the
camp that played goalball in the Olympics in Beijing. The final night of the
five-day camp students talked about adapting hockey and lacrosse for the
visually impaired.

National School-Lunch Week Poster Contest
ISVI recognized National School Lunch Week October 12–16. Students voted for
favorite menus to be served that week. In art classes, students designed and
created posters. They are very creative and are on display in the dining hall.
Dining hall manager Cindy Daughtery has decided that the posters are all
winners and each student who made a poster received a prize!

their posters)
Braille Car Rally Results
The Braille Car Rally was held on October 3rd on the ISVI campus. It began with
registration and lunch. Then each driver was paired with a student from ISVI
who acted as the navigator. There were 15 vehicles in the event. Some of the
volunteer drivers were from local businesses. Some cars also had a student
rider who wanted to ride along to participate in the event. The navigator had
directions for a 40-mile route and the directions were either in Braille or in
large print. The object was to navigate the pre-planned route in a time closest
to the time it took a pace car to navigate the route.
Upon completion of the rally, medals were given to those finishing 1st through
3rd places and a certificate was given to each participant. A
cook-out followed the awards presentation. It was a fun day for the drivers,
navigators, students, and staff!!!
(1st-place winners of the event are pictured. They are ISVI Art
Educator, Anna Bergschneider and two ISVI students who were Mrs. Bergschneider's Braille-reader
navigators._
Track is for Everyone at ISVI!!!
On October 7th, following the annual Jukebox Classics concert, a modified
track meet was held at the ISVI track. Coach Raabe, Coach Chambers, and Mrs.
Turner organized the event and the members of the ISVI track team helped with
lining students up and with measuring distances. Students ran, jumped, and they
threw weighted balls. Also, a new event was introduced for those who use
wheelchairs. Distance was measured after the student gave one big push of their
wheelchair wheels with their hands. The spectators cheered and clapped which
brought out many smiles from the participants. It was a fun event and proved
that track is for everyone at ISVI!!!

see how far her wheelchair will roll; second photo captures
four elementary-age students running the track lanes; third photo is a
student doing a jump into the sand pit)
Field Trip to the Prairie
On Friday October 16th, Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Hauck took their class to
the Rexroat Cabins and Prairie in Virginia, Illinois. The students had the opportunity
to see what people had in their homes when Abraham Lincoln was living in
Illinois. They also had the experience of feeling what it was like to walk
through the prairie.

students trying out a very old toy)
Fall Field Trip
On Friday, October 16th, a group of students visited the Pumpkin Patch
in Jacksonville. Each student got to select and purchase a pumpkin. They will
decorate their pumpkin for the upcoming pumpkin decorating contest. After
everyone selected a pumpkin the group enjoyed dinner at McDonalds.
