ISVI Sends Cookies to the Troops
Mrs. Strang’s Orientation to Family and Food Science Classes made cookies for the Franklin/Waverly Military Support Group. The classes made 19 ½ dozen cookies which included sugar cookies, snicker doodles, chocolate snicker doodles, and peanut butter cookies. They also sent cards in Braille and in print. The students were happy to show their appreciation for what the troops are doing for our country.

Japanese Students Visit ISVI
Every winter ISVI hosts a group of Japanese students from Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto Japan. This event is organized each year by ISVI O&M Specialist, Mr. Jim Strader.

Mr. Strader gave a basic introduction to visual impairment and cane travel and then the group was guided by ISVI students to some individual classrooms to observe. Lastly, the guests and ISVI students and staff gathered in the dining hall for small group discussions. It was a great opportunity for all involved to exchange cultural ideas and experiences.

ISVI students gave the Japanese students origami swans made out of paper printed in Braille.

Two Upcoming Career Fairs
On April 2nd students in Employability Skills classes will be participating in a Career Expo at MacMurray College. All students will need to dress as if they are going to a job interview. At the Career Expo they will be meeting a lot of potential employers. Students will be escorted by educators and staff.

On April 10th there will be a Career Fair and Reality Store in the dining hall at ISVI. This event is sponsored by the Morgan County Extension Office. Students will participate in a real-life experience where they will choose what type of career they want, what type of living arrangement, transportation, etc. They will be issued cards that will tell them random real-life situations. They will keep a check book and have to write checks for their bills and keep a running total of their money as they are issued cards that tell them what they owe for utilities, insurance, food, clothing, etc.

Students Attend Globetrotters Face-off Against The Washington Generals
By Reporter Connie B.

On Tuesday, January 13 students from both ISVI and ISD took a combined field trip into Springfield. Their destination? The Prairie Capital Convention Center. Their plan? To attend the Globetrotters’ game against the Washington Generals.

The game began at 7 p.m. For those who do not know, a basketball game has four quarters, each twelve minutes long. After an intense forty-eight minutes including a dispute with a referee, the Globetrotters defeated the Washington Generals. Once it was made clear the students were visually impaired, they were given seats near the court. They were able to get autographs from several players. Students enjoyed hilarious antics by the Globetrotters’ clown,.
