ISVI Celebrates 160th!!!!
January 13th, 2010 was the 160th birthday of ISVI. The
celebration began in the auditorium with a welcome by Mr. Clinton. Mr.
Thompson introduced several speakers who graduated from ISVI. The speakers were
graduates from the span of the 1930’s thru the 1980’s. They shared with the
audience what ISVI means to them. Staff and students enjoyed hearing the old
stories about ISVI.
A commemorative quilt square was presented to ISVI. Art Educator Mrs.
Bergschneider drew the drawing of the original school building. The needlework
was done by an ISVI staff member, Caroline Daniel. The quilt square is framed
with a frame built by Industrial Arts Teacher, Mr. Radliff. It is will be
placed in the ISVI museum. The plan is to surround this quilt square with
squares that feature other original buildings.
Students received donated books that tell about the life of Dr. Jacob Bolotin.
He graduated from ISVI in 1904 and went on to become a medical doctor.
Refreshments were enjoyed in the dining hall. Some of the cakes were decorated
to look as if they were covered with Braille.

Learning about Electricity
Mrs. Miller’s Science Class is having fun learning about electronics. They are
using a Snap Circuits Kit to assemble different experiments. The objective is
to create different circuits. In one experiment, they used a switch to open and
close a circuit. In another experiment, they used electric energy to create
kinetic energy that turned the blades of a fan. The student pictured is
controlling the electrical current to make music and sound which was part of the
adjusting sound- level experiment.

Lab Work in Science Class
This student is performing a lab experiment in Mrs. French’s Science Class. The
experiment will measure the effects of temperature on the growth of yeast. The
student is measuring water into graduated cylinders. The water is blue so that
it is more easily seen. She is using a magnifier to assist with reading the
measurement indicators. Yeast and sugar will be added to the cylinders of water
and then the cylinders will be exposed to different temperatures. One will be
placed in an ice bath, another will be placed on a hot plate, and another will
be stored at room temperature. To measure the results the student will use a
carbon dioxide probe.

Accelerated Reading Class -- Reading is Fun!!!
Students in Mrs. Wright’s Accelerated Reading class are increasing their reading
skills by using the Treasures Reading Program. One student is shown taking a
test using enlarged print. Another student is shown reading with a CCTV.
After they read a story, they take a computerized reading quiz. The quiz
measures their comprehension and vocabulary. To celebrate their reading
accomplishments the students receive coupons for free personal-pan pizzas from
Pizza Hut. The free pizzas are part of the “Book It” program.
