Earth Stewardship Week
Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Lyons and their classes attended the Earth Stewardship Week presentations at the 4-H camp at Lake Jacksonville. This event was put on by the University of Illinois Extension. There were many activities at the event. ISVI students participated in watershed bingo. All of our water saving students won a prize. They learned about bad weather and precautions to take. Also, they hurried through the recycle relay race and learned hands on about water erosion at the fantastic water table wagon. Their favorite activity was petting the snake at the Henson Robinson Zoo. One student loved petting the corn snake. He said, "I would like to have one for a pet". Another student liked the birds singing in the trees. She recognized the call of the King Fisher. A 7th grade student stated, "I liked the hawk from the Henson Robinson Zoo. He was only one year old". One of the younger students was enchanted by the plastic sand and flowing river in the water table wagon. ISVI students enjoyed a sack lunch along with the several hundred other students that attended the event.

Smile Illinois Dental Clinic Provides Services to ISVI Students
On October 16, 2007, the Smile Illinois Mobile Dental Clinic set up their portable dental clinic in the ISVI Health Center. Twenty-eight students participated in this dental clinic. A thorough dental examination and screening was completed by the dentist. Then the dental hygienist completed the dental cleaning followed by a fluoride treatment. Students who had evidence of cavities had a sealant applied to those teeth. A dental report card was sent to each student’s parent or guardian that received services. Parents will have this information for their records and follow up recommendations are listed on the report card. We look forward to having services from SMILE ILLINOIS Dental Program next year.

Another Successful Track Season
This has been one of the more successful years in terms of continual improvement from meet to meet by the ISVI tracksters as measured by the setting of new personal records for faster times and further distances. It was also successful in terms of meets won and hardware attained. For the third consecutive year, Team Illinois won the Al Eberhardt and thus retains the traveling trophy for another year. Team Illinois also won the Wisconsin meet, placed an unofficial second at Kansas, and placed third in the NCASB Conference Championships, only eleven points out of first. Individual success was apparent not only by the weekly personal records established by each athlete but also by the number of champions crowned in the eleven school NCASB Track Championship. Team Illinois crowned eight champions and had an additional eleven finishes from second place through sixth.

Braille Car Rally and Flea Market
On September 29th, the ISVI Parent Organization hosted a Flea Market in ISVI’s gymnasium. Approximately fifteen vendors participated in the event. The students seemed to enjoy visiting each of the booths and some of them got some great bargains. As part of the Flea Market event, ISVI staff filled a dozen baskets based on themes. The themes ranged from "The Man Basket" to "Chocolate Indulgence" to "Good Morning Surprise". The ISVI Parent Organization earned a lot of money with this event! A big THANK YOU goes out to all who participated.

The Flea Market was held in conjunction with the Braille Sports Car Rally. This event has a long history at ISVI. The students who participated were all very proud as they navigated their way through the course. There were many people who participated in the event. Some of the participants included: the Mayor of Jacksonville, ISVI Parents, ISVI staff, staff from the local newspaper, Lions Club members, and many more. This was a great day for all. Also, the students had the opportunity to use a sledge hammer to take a swing at a demolition car. They enjoyed riding in a very special old car. They even got to enjoy cotton candy! Thanks to the Braille Car Rally Committee for putting on such a fabulous event.
