GOALBALL SEASON 2011-2012

Sports News from the NCASB Goalball Championships November 4 – 5, 2011 –

Girls team background:

Throughout last year’s championship run and this year’s season, Indiana has been Team Illinois’ arch rival. During this year’s season, Team Illinois girls faced Indiana and lost at Illinois 2-0 and then lost again in Tennessee to Indiana 3-0. So guess what team Illinois had to face 1st round….. you’re so smart …. Indiana. This time Team Illinois Girls defeated Indiana 3-2. At the end of regulation time the score was 2-2. At the end of the 1st overtime the score was still 2-2. At the end of the second overtime the score was ……..2-2. At the end of the first round of shoot-offs (a series of one-on-one penalty shots) the score was 4-4. Then Indiana was called on a eyeshade infraction and had to face another penalty shot which they failed to block so ….. ILLIINOIS won that game.

Round two saw Illinois lose to Kentucky 7-0. The score did not indicate the level of play as an experiment occurred after Illinois was down 2-0. Illinois defeated Ohio by the 10 score rule (mercy rule) in a 11-1 game and then had to face INDIANA again and lost 1-0 with :58 seconds. Indiana eventually won the tournament by defeating Kentucky two times 6-0 and 1-0.

TEAM ILLINOIS GIRLS 4th place, record 2-2

Boys team background:

At Illinois, Team IL boys defeated Missouri 7-6 because Missouri scored on themselves in overtime. Illinois also lost to Team Indiana 3-2 on the same day. In Tennessee, Team IL boys lost to MO in a team building exercise 5-4 and defeated Indiana 7-3. Well guess which team Illinois had to face first round in the tournament ………….. ….wrong…..we faced Indiana and defeated them by mercy rule 11-1. Team boys also defeated Wisconsin by the same score and result 11-1. Illinois then faced Kentucky in the semi-finals and Team IL boys won 16-8. In the other semi-final Kansas defeated Missouri 18-12. So in the finals of a double elimination tournament you have two undefeated teams facing each other…..Team Illinois vs Team Kansas (both coaches graduates of WIU) Team Illinois won in the last second by mercy rule 14-4 but since that was Kansas’ first loss, Illinois had at least one more game to play. We had to wait to see who would be the consolation champion. The consolation championship was a rematch of the KS vs MO game. Kansas started strong and built a 5-0 lead only to have the game tied 13-13 with 1 second left. The game went into overtime and Kansas emerged the victor 14-13. In the finals Illinois set history by defeating Kansas by mercy rule 11-1 (a possible conference record) they also are , for the first time in I don’t know how many decades (more than 30 years) that Team Boys has won a Conference Championship in any sport. As stated in the first e-mail of the season: There are and will be no individual accolades because it again was a team effort. All team members played, all team members scored, all team members made mistakes, and all team members made great defensives saves. As the saying goes, offense brings in a crowd (which we had a staff member and many family members in attendance) but defense wins championships. Mercifully, we had both this weekend.

TEAM ILLINOIS are 2011 NCASB Goalball Conference Champions

( because it is a team sport and they truly turned into a team by the end of the season)

A special thanks to the girls teams and coach for their support in helping the boys learn and showing them how to be a team to win a championship like they did the previous year. We also appreciate the support of staff in their understanding of the schedule, practices, and play. Last but certainly not least, we would like to thank all the generous people who helped raise money or make donations to allow Team ILLINOIS to compete out-of-state. Thanks again.

October 6, 2011 Home Goalball Meet Results from Coach Raabe---

Thanks again to TEAM ILLINOIS Campus on a successful the GREAT GYMNASIUM GOALBALL GAMES GALA!

From comments from visiting teams and fans, their experience was great. A special mention to the volunteer staff who spent 7 consecutive hours scoring, recording, timing, high balling, and bean bagging……Great job!!!!!

Team results are below.

Individual scoring stats will not be provided as goalball is a team game and the team is more important than the individual. Defensive stops are as important as goals. Lack of penalties are even more important. Have a great day and better weekend.
