of Illinois Department of Human Services Illinois School for the Visually Impaired Goals Short Courses for Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired The Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI) offers short-term services to students who are blind and visually impaired who attend local school districts. GATES (Goals, Advocacy, Transition, Empowerment, Shortcourses) is IEP driven designed to create the vision-specific needs of students through direct instruction in the nationally recognized Expanded Core Curriculum. GATES provides intensive short-term instruction to assist students in acquiring skills needed to perform successfully in the general education curriculum. Since skill acquisition is vertical, students may benefit from different levels of GATES at different developmental levels. Students with visual impairments, ages 14 to 22, may request 9 weeks of specialized instruction per school year. WHAT IS THE GATES PROGRAM Courses Offered:
Orientation & Mobility (O&M)
The Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI), established in 1849, is a residential/day school for students who are blind or visually impaired. Located in Jacksonville, ISVI provides accredited educational and related services for children from birth to 22 years of age through preschool, elementary and high school. All educational and social programs are designed to prepare students for successful living as independent, self-supporting citizens. For Information Contact:
