Short Courses for Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired

The Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI) offers short-term services to students who are blind and visually impaired who attend local school districts. GATES (Goals, Advocacy, Transition, Empowerment, Shortcourses) is IEP driven designed to create the vision-specific needs of students through direct instruction in the nationally recognized Expanded Core Curriculum.

GATES provides intensive short-term instruction to assist students in acquiring skills needed to perform successfully in the general education curriculum. Since skill acquisition is vertical, students may benefit from different levels of GATES at different developmental levels. Students with visual impairments, ages 14 to 22, may request 9 weeks of specialized instruction per school year.

WHAT IS THE GATES PROGRAM
GATES is an intensive short-term program designed to provide specific, direct instruction in the Expanded Core Curriculum and individually identified areas of need for students who are blind or visually impaired. Students will attend ISVI for a short-course to develop Expanded Core Curriculum Skills.
