Students in the Independent Living Center (TLC) preparing foodEducational Diagnostic Services

The education of students who are blind or visually impaired starts through educational diagnosis. This is the first step in preparation of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) geared to the individual student. Diagnostic evaluations for admission and for outreach services generally last two weeks.

A written report includes the social history, medical, psychological, sensory, cognitive, physical, educational and emotional factors, as well as assessment of daily living skills, orientation and mobility needs, visual assessment and other pertinent information. Educational and student service staff assist in interpreting the diagnostic findings and utilize this information to develop the IEP.

Each student at ISVI has a written Individualized Education Program (IEP) which is regularly reviewed and annually evaluated.

Instruction is given in the use of assistive technological software and hardware devices, including computer skills, keyboarding, self care, daily living skills, homemaking, arts and crafts, industrial arts, orientation and mobility (O&M), adaptive physical education (PE), music and constructive use of leisure time.

A pre-vocational curriculum for secondary students emphasizes skill development and job responsibility.

Tactile aids and Braille are used by those who are blind or have minimal functional vision.

ISVI hosts a nationally recognized Low Vision Clinic sponsored by the Lions of Illinois Foundation. This clinic, offered twice per school year, offers free low vision examinations, optical aids and training to develop and use a student's remaining vision. The clinic is available to ISVI students and other students who from all over central and southern Illinois.

The ISVI school term provides for 176 days of attendance and includes vacation periods that closely correspond to public day school schedules. Children whose parents live in or near Jacksonville may attend the school as day students. Other students go home one or two weekends a month or as often as they choose. In this way students can obtain the most appropriate education and still maintain important ties with their family and community.

Educational Resources Program

ISVI has advanced IBM compatible computer technology including a with a wide array of assistive programs and equipment. Such equipment includes various note takers, Braille embossers, screen readers, speech synthesizers, digital cameras, scanners, with laser and ink jet printers.
Students are able to have access to the school's local- and wide-area-network (LAN/WAN) so they may learn how to correctly send and receive e-mail as well as have supervised access to the Internet.

The ISVI library maintains materials for children, young adults and adults in Braille, print/Braille, large print, regular print and on audiocassette. These collections include books, periodicals and reference materials. Reference materials are also available on CD-ROM. Additional collections include tactile aids and a professional library with extensive materials in the education, development and support of individuals with visual impairments.
