GENERAL INFORMATION NEWS PARENTS |
The education of students who are blind or visually impaired starts through educational diagnosis. This is the first step in preparation of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) geared to the individual student. Diagnostic evaluations for admission and for outreach services generally last two weeks. A written report includes the social history, medical, psychological, sensory, cognitive, physical, educational and emotional factors, as well as assessment of daily living skills, orientation and mobility needs, visual assessment and other pertinent information. Educational and student service staff assist in interpreting the diagnostic findings and utilize this information to develop the IEP. Educational Program Each student at ISVI has a written Individualized Education Program (IEP) which is regularly reviewed and annually evaluated. Instruction is given in the use of assistive technological software and hardware devices, including computer skills, keyboarding, self care, daily living skills, homemaking, arts and crafts, industrial arts, orientation and mobility (O&M), adaptive physical education (PE), music and constructive use of leisure time. A pre-vocational curriculum for secondary students emphasizes skill development and job responsibility. Tactile aids and Braille are used by those who are blind or have minimal functional vision.
